DESCRIPTION:
EPW - Gruen, Swiss, "Paladin Model," pentagonal case measures 46mm at widest point, heavy 14K white gold OF original Gruen Verithin case with elegant black enameling to bezel and rear perimeter, "Dietrich Gruen Precision" marked silvered dial with applied gold numerals, SW-SS, fully capped lever escapement with moustache counterpoise, 21J, wheel satin nickel finish, "Chronometer Balance" and "Precision" marked mvt, s#148847 to mvt, s#1126787 to case. Comes as pictured with its original "The Gruen Pentagon" marked fitted leather box as well as a Gruen certificate with original owner's name and correctly matching serial number to case written in ink. Gross weight of assembled watch 35.7 dwt (55.4 g). Our consignor notes that this watch was won by illustrator, author and editor George Teeple Eggleston in February of 1928, and please see our photos for the image of an article found in the February 29th, 1928 issue of the "Oakland Tribune" noting the awarding of this watch and showing a photo of the 21 year old George T. Eggleston. CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some toning of plate surfaces, some oxide to steel balance jewel cap, few very small bits of mild oxide elsewhere to steelwork; dial with dark spot to perimeter at 1:30 and lesser darkening throughout remainder of perimeter; excellent hour hand and seconds-hand, minute hand with oxide to tip; case shows very little wear, profuse micro-fine scratches to rear, no dents or dings, enamel virtually fully intact with few negligible minuscule nicks; bow pivots freely, crown shows little wear; good glass crystal; box shows medium wear, deterioration of exterior finish with areas of tearing, separation, and loss.
